NHL Hockey Sports Gifts and Memorabilia

Ice hockey is a very fast and often rough sport. In places where there are long winters hockey provides the same sports thrills that fans expect and then some. In many of the cities and schools, especially in the colder section of the country, Ice Hockey is the sport talked about and the sport that matters.

Apparently there are records which show that the rules for ice hockey were written at McGill University in Montreal in 1875 for Canada and a formal hockey league in the United States was formed in 1897. There are reports of folks playing something similar to what now is ice hockey in the mid 1850’s in Canada. This version could have been something that was being played in England which was known as bandy among other names. Other reports suggest Irish origins.

When you consider that you really can't play Ice Hockey without ice or without skates the real origins point to the Scandanavian Countries. The earliest skate had a bone runner and was discovered in Sweden, it appears to have been from the 8th century. Until fairly recently ice hockey could not be played in places like Los Angeles or Florida. Modern skating rings and television have helped bring this sport to the warmer portions of the country.
