The game of football in America can be traced back to the late 1600’s. The contest at that time seems to have been between rival towns. Later in the 1800’s there were contests in schools and colleges between different class levels. Later college teams played one another within the New England area of the country. By the 1890’s the sport spread past New England into the mid west section of the country.

As you can imagine, the early form of this sport was dangerous, several players were killed while playing the sport. In the early 1900’s we see the formation of intercollegiate associations and the formation of standardized rules.

As the sport became popular many cities formed football teams and in 1920 the American Football Association was formed which had thirteen teams. Several years later the National Football Association was formed.

The history of football really must go back much further. In Europe ball games with some similarities existed back into the mideval period. There seems to have been games around which were similar to football, baseball and bowling in various configurations. It is interesting that at one time the Catholic Church encouraged many of these games.

The degree of importance that NFL football has come to play within American society is amazing. For half of each year, on any given Sunday afternoon, much of our great nation is watching football. Watching two teams play one another connects us as a people. This is when football really works it’s magic. It does wonders for the fans, it does wonders for the players, and it does wonders for the sponsors and the owners. Even for the losing team this can be a positive momment.. an opportunity to get into the game and analyze why they lost... to improve and come back fighting even harder next time.
